Welcome to root 2 logic

The Site

This site contains a complete introductory logic course.

Those of you enrolled in my logic course will have the benefit of classroom discussion, exercises, and the support of your peers.  You will also receive college credit for the course.

Even without the benefit of our in-class activities, the site contains the equivalent of an introductory logic course.

How to Learn Logic

Learning logic is like learning a language- you have to practice consistently if you want to be able to use the skill when needed.   Much of what we do here amounts to unlearning established habits of mind and developing new patterns of thought.  You must practice.

About Me

I taught my first logic class at the University of Connecticut in 2006 and have been teaching it regularly ever since; most recently, at the University of New Haven and at Gateway Community College in New Haven CT.

This course, and my teaching, owes quite a debt to my teachers and colleagues.  In particular: J.C. Beall who raised me from logic infancy.  Reed Solomon who led me through the guts of Godel.  Marcus Rossberg who generously shared his teaching materials with me as I frantically prepared for my first independent course.  Austen Clark who led me to logic in the first place and who has been running a self-paced logic course for decades.  And Ronald Pine and Patrick Hurley whose texts I have used in my course for years and from whom I have inherited some excellent examples and structural elements.

Where to Start

Start with INTRO TO ARGUMENTS

You will then have the basics and can move on to any of the other three sections- Informal fallacies, Inductive Reasoning, or Formal Proofs.
